Shepherd Song

Lambs bleat on the hill.
Wolves howl from the woods.
The shepherd rests on the knoll
between the two,
whistling a love song.
In a grassy field,
the difference between fear and calm
is a soft trill, unspoken words,
feelings a hundred wells deep.
Lambs pray for his continued contentment,
wolves hunger for a breakup with his betrothed.
As twilight approaches,
love is the survival of lambs,
the hunger of wolves.
